THE CARNIVAL
IGLESIAS - MARRUBIU
In Sardinia the Carnival
begins on January 17 with the party of S. Anthony Abbot and is concluded with
the Pentolaccia the Sunday that follows on Wednesdays of the ashes. The carnival
is often represented from a king and a queen or from a puppet of roll to which
a name of imagination very often gives each other. The puppet is brought in
procession to be burnt then.
IGLESIAS
Also
this year deriving groups from the whole Sardinia will give life to the carnival
of Iglesias. As it is known, actually to a little while ago, Iglesias was city
of mines and the wealth of the subsoil of the whole zone she has attracted for
a long time, with the perspective of easy earnings, the strangers with their
habits, their customs and therefore also with their parties and their ways to
have a good time. To Iglesias this puppet is called Norfieddu and anchor
today she is brought around for the city and, at the end of the celebrations,
burnt in a big fire. In last century, Victor Angius, in his History of Iglesias,
so he wrote: "By now the carnival you has lost not few of the ancient hilarity
and festivity and it is not practised the game of the oranges that they were
launched by the masks and buttocks from the persons disguised not against those
that they were found anymore in the street or they had leaned out to the balconies.
In 1866 town documents he reads that during the carnival runs of masks were
developed to horse along the historical center of the city, with big share of
people so much from to require a notable help from the public strength. With
the last war, the carnival of Iglesias has gone in disuse and solo in the last
years the Borough Council Clerk's Office to the Tourism, in collaboration with
that to the Public Education, he has increased and organized the spontaneous
masks resulting in the parades of the wagons and the deriving disguised groups
from all the parts of Sardinia. Also this year the elegance of the customs,
the inventive express in the wagons and the big share of public they will be
the ingredients of the carnival of Iglesias; more than five thousand masks they
will unthread for the roads of the city, but other hundred they will turn freely
between the thousand of tourists and curious that will arrive from the whole
island showing big interest by now for an usual appointment for the Sardinians.
The parade will take the start in the first afternoon with in head Norfieddu,
which will follow the wagons and the masks of Iglesias and the other island
centers among which Cortoghiana, Samassi, Saint Gavino. To carnival book for
fabulous dances in mask.
MARRUBIU
The
carnival of Marrubiu, relegated for a long arc of time in the drawer of the
memoirs, you/he/she has been discovered again and revalued in 1979 almost unexpectedly.
Without shade of doubt, the carnival of manages Marrubiu a strong call on the
inhabitants of the center of the campidano so much that different thousand of
persons flow in the roads it crossed from the disguised procession to admire
the hundred masks that they unthread. The parade departed then from plaza of
the martyrs to end in plaza of the Market. The zippolata didn't exist
yet (preparation of fried sweets), but already in that edition he was burnt
in plaza King Carnevale, represented by a wood puppet dressed of old rags. In
1980, to his second edition, the demand is manifested to give a name, but above
all an image symbol to this pre-Lenten demonstration. It is born therefore Su
Labi, a big wood piece that anciently he was used for holding near the two
oxen that hauled the wagon only to an arm. This symbol was chosen by all the
heads wagon of that edition. From to remember the 1989 edition that he saw the
parade opened by the wagon of Su Marruleri, accompanied by the trumpeters
and drummers of the Sartiglia of Oristano, the fire of King Carnevale
and the offer to the present authorities and first classified him a figurine
in wood that represents the local mask. It is 1991 the introduction of a parade
for children and the idea to erect a circus awning where to let develop big
part of the demonstration, his children's carnival, dances and music. In the
first afternoon it will have beginning the parade that, as from tradition, it
will depart from plaza of the Martyrs and it will cross the principal streets
of Marrubiu to end to half evening for the fun of great and small that also
this year they won't want to the big appointment to miss.
